ORVILLE COWARD FORUMS TO AIR PUBLIC ISSUES...

The Orville Coward Forums on Public Issues  launched its premier event on Tuesday, April 22, 2008.

The April Forum topic, “The Cost of Medical Care as Affected by Court Cases and Insurance”, was
the first of three separate topic events to be held in 2008.  The speaker for this forum held at the 553 West
Main Street restaurant in downtown Sylva, was Dr. Randall Provost, a well-known medical authority in
Jackson County.

The Forum series is sponsored by the Jackson County Republican Organization and the name chosen recognizes
the role prominent resident Orville Coward has played in public affairs in Jackson County and the state of North
Carolina.

The Forums are open to all western North Carolina citizens interested in hearing from speakers known to be
prominent authorities on the selected subject issue.  The goal of the Forums is to accurately inform citizens by
presenting excellent speakers on current topics thereby providing a learning experience for those who attend.

In describing the Forum rationale, organizing chair Fran Webster explains, “The primary source of information
on public action and policies has been through the media with very little dialog presenting other points of view.”
“The Orville Coward Forums will provide not only accurate information on the subject but an opportunity for
attendees to question or comment after the speaker presentation,” he continued.

Early this year Webster formed a steering committee to establish the purpose and lay out the details of the
Forum series. Steering committee members from throughout Jackson County include Webster, Jay Coward,
Art Ellick, Phyllis Fox and Ralph Slaughter.

The committee is considering future 2008 Forum topics including the Fair/Flat Tax, Energy Problems and
Solutions and A Pro/Con History of the Electoral College.  All the topics are considered critical to the future of
our county, state and country. The Forum Steering Committee will seek opinions from attendees in selecting
the next topics.
